David:
Actually, as you see mentioned at
http://blogs.zdnet.com/BTL/?p=7386 the "official" internally provided Linux client within IBM is Red Hat based. RPM is used for the Sametime packaging because it is applicable to both supported platforms, Red Hat and SuSE. Also, RPM is what was chosen as part of the Linux Standard Base as the installation package. That said, I personally use Ubuntu at home and have recently installed it on a secondary work machine.
You said Notes is a .tar.gz, but in actuality it comes with InstallShield packaging. You were able to get an alternative format somehow?
Within IBM, those using Ubuntu (yes as you said there is interest) and debian were still using Sametime 7.5.1 and not 8.0 until very recently. So the script issues with Ubuntu were found too late to get the fix into the Sametime 8.0 product.
I am investigating what can be done to solve your issues on Ubuntu, be it a set of steps to repackage the RPM as a deb or perhaps something easier. Also, there is a hotfix available for the location awareness problem on Ubuntu you referenced (the fix is for Sametime 8.0). I will investigate how to make that available to you as well.
